A CT scan (computed tomography) combines a series of X-ray images taken from different angles and uses computer processing to create cross-sectional images, or slices, of the bones, blood vessels and soft tissues inside the body.
CT images provide more detailed information than plain X-rays. CT has many uses, but it is particularly well suited to examining people with internal injuries from accidents or other trauma.
CT can be used to image almost any part of the body. It is used to diagnose disease or injury, and also to plan medical or surgical treatment or radiotherapy.
A CT scan lets your doctor see cross-sectional images of your body; these slices show lung and heart tissue clearly.
