The Patient Rights Charter rests on five principles:
- Receiving appropriate health services is the patient's right.
- Patients must be given sufficient information in an appropriate way.
- Confidentiality and the patient's privacy must be respected.
- The patient's right to choose and to decide freely must be respected.
- Access to an effective complaints system is the patient's right.
