The maternity ward at Nimeh Shaaban Hospital has LDR rooms (Labour, Delivery and Recovery) – single-occupancy birthing suites. The LDR room is considered the best model of maternity care in the world: the mother-to-be has her own room for the whole birth, and her husband or a close family member can stay with her. In traditional maternity units, by contrast, each stage took place in a separate room and no companion was allowed.
