Preparation form for barium swallow, upper GI series and bowel transit studies:
- The X-ray requested by your doctor is to examine the digestive tract using an oral contrast agent (barium sulphate powder dissolved in water).
- Because this centre has inpatient wards and services for inpatients take priority, and because of the time needed to prepare the patient and their medication, allow about 2 hours for your time in the department.
- If you have a history of digestive ulcers or surgery on the digestive system, please tell us.
- Come to the department at 8 a.m., fasting.
- One person must accompany the patient.
- On the day of the X-ray, bring all your medical records (ultrasound, endoscopy, etc.) with you.
- Women who think they may be pregnant should tell the staff before the X-ray.
