Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is a major operation that removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and also tightens the muscles. It aims to remove loose skin that exercise cannot fix – for example after pregnancy or major weight loss.
Before surgery
- Do not smoke for two weeks before and after the operation.
- For at least ten days before surgery, avoid aspirin, blood thinners and similar medicines such as ibuprofen, diclofenac and indomethacin.
After surgery
- Swelling and mild pain are normal in the first few days. Walk slightly bent forward during these days, keep walking during your recovery and move your legs while resting.
- If possible, get out of bed and walk on the evening of the operation.
- Wear an abdominal binder or compression garment day and night for at least 2 months.
- Drink plenty of water, do not smoke and take a multivitamin every day.
- If liposuction was done at the same time, wear the special compression garment.
- Avoid strenuous sport after the operation.
Tests and consultations needed before surgery
- Laboratory tests: CBC, FBS, PT, PTT, INR, BG & Rh, BUN, Cr, Na, K, AST, ALT, T3, T4, TSH
- Imaging: Ultrasound of the abdomen, pelvis and abdominal wall to check for hernia
- Consultations: Internal medicine and cardiology consultation if the patient is over 40
