Laminectomy is surgery in which the surgeon removes part or all of the vertebral bone (lamina). This eases pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots caused by injury, a herniated disc, narrowing of the spinal canal (spinal stenosis) or tumours.
Before surgery
- Before the operation, your doctor reviews your medical history and may order tests to check your general health.
- Ask your doctor any questions you have about the surgery, and tell them if you are allergic to anaesthetics or any other medicines.
- Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take; you may be given instructions about medicines and food before the operation.
- If you take blood thinners, tell your doctor so that they can be stopped a few days before surgery.
After surgery
- Rest for as long as your doctor advises and do not rush back into your daily activities.
- Never lift or carry heavy objects, and avoid putting strain on your back when sitting, standing up or even sleeping.
- If physiotherapy is recommended, attend the prescribed number of sessions to strengthen your muscles.
- Keep taking your medicines for as long as your doctor recommends; this helps your spine heal and gives the best result.
- Eat a varied diet with plenty of fluids and nourishing foods to prevent constipation and meet your body's needs.
- Do not take up any extra activity until your doctor allows it; your doctor will teach you the special stretching and mobility exercises to do after the operation.
Tests and consultations needed before surgery
- Laboratory tests: CBC, PT, INR, BG & Rh
- Consultations: Internal medicine and cardiology consultation if the patient is over 40
