Mammaplasty is a group of operations that reshape or otherwise change the appearance of the breasts. Augmentation mammaplasty is usually performed to increase the size, change the shape or alter the texture of the breasts.
Before surgery
- If you smoke, stop two weeks before the operation and do not smoke for two weeks after it. Avoid blood thinners such as aspirin and ibuprofen as far as possible.
- If you have a history of anaemia, take iron tablets and folic acid for one month before the operation.
After surgery
- Do not open the sterile dressing during the first 48 hours, to avoid increasing the risk of infection.
- The breast drains are removed two days after the operation; do not bathe until they have been removed.
- Wear a medical (surgical) bra for at least one month.
- Sometimes blood-stained fluid collects in the breast after the drains are removed, causing a feeling of heaviness and tightness; it must be drained at the clinic.
- Avoid strenuous activity, heavy lifting and vigorous arm movements for two weeks.
- For three months, avoid sleeping on your front, upper-body stretching exercises, swimming and similar activities.
- Take the medicines prescribed for you carefully and do not take any others without your doctor's advice.
Tests and consultations needed before surgery
- Laboratory tests: CBC, PT, PTT, INR, FBS, BG & Rh
- Imaging: Breast and armpit ultrasound, and mammography if the patient is over 40
- Consultations: Internal medicine and cardiology consultation if the patient is over 40
