Cosmetic rhinoplasty aims to improve the appearance of the nose and bring it into harmony with the other facial features. It can also reshape the inside of the nose so that you can breathe more easily. The operation reconstructs and reshapes the bone and cartilage to improve the look or function of the nose.
Before surgery
- For two weeks before surgery, avoid aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), vitamin E and any medicine that contains them.
- Do not smoke for two weeks before and after surgery; nicotine and tobacco slow healing and make scarring more likely.
- Avoid the sun for two weeks before surgery and use sunscreen (SPF 20 or higher) regularly.
After surgery
- Avoid sunlight for 2 months after nose surgery; the skin is very sensitive and sun exposure can cause scarring.
- Cold compresses: for the first 48 hours after surgery, apply cold compresses to the eyes and cheeks to reduce swelling and bruising.
- Sleep with your head raised above your body on several pillows.
- For at least 2 weeks, avoid strenuous sport, heavy lifting and bending over, so that no pressure is put on the nose.
Tests and consultations needed before surgery
- Laboratory tests: CBC, PT, INR, BG & Rh
- Imaging: If breathing through the nose is impaired: CT scan of the paranasal sinuses
- Consultations: Internal medicine and cardiology consultation if the patient is over 40
